How Do Full Mouth Implants work?

At your first appointment, we’ll spend time on a detailed examination of your jawbone, gums, and remaining teeth (if any).  Aided by 2D or 3D Xrays, this step is vital for determining the optimal placement for your implants.

The next step is the actual placement of the implants.

Small titanium posts that are surgically inserted into your jawbone, serving as the roots for your new teeth.

In Full Mouth Implants, either four or six implants are strategically placed in the upper or lower jaw. The placement is planned in a way to maximise the support from your existing bone structure and to distribute the forces from chewing evenly.

Once the implants are placed, there’s a healing period known as ‘osseointegration’.

During this time, the implants integrate with your bone, forming a strong bond that ensures stability and longevity. After osseointegration, your dentist will attach abutments to the implants.

The final step is the fitting of the overdenture, which is a custom-made set of prosthetic teeth. The overdenture is meticulously crafted in a dental lab to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth.

Once fitted, it is securely fixed to the abutments. What you get as a result is a fully functional set of teeth that look, feel, and operate just like natural teeth. They offer you the strength to chew all types of food, the confidence to smile without hesitation, and the comfort of knowing they’re designed to last.

Would I Be A Good Candidate?

Success heavily depends on the overall health of your mouth and body.

To break it down, dental implant placement, albeit minor, is still a surgical procedure. Therefore, it necessitates robust overall health.

Chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes, as well as a history of radiation therapy in the head or neck area, need to be individually assessed. It’s crucial to openly discuss any health issues with your Implant Dentist, ensuring you receive accurate and professional advice.

Oral health is another key factor. Persistent gum disease might jeopardise the success of the implantation.

Healthy gums are vital, but worry not if you have gum issues; with appropriate treatment and good oral hygiene, gum disease can often be stabilised to create a favourable environment for implants.

Adequate jawbone density is also paramount as the bone serves as the anchor for the implant.   We have a CT X-Ray onsite which will give you and the Dentist a clear idea following the first appointment.

In cases of insufficient bone volume, solutions like bone grafts, where synthetic bone material is used to encourage new bone growth, can be considered.

Smoking is another important factor to consider, as it can hinder post-surgery healing and potentially reduce the success rate of implants.

Aftercare

Taking care of your Full Mouth Dental Implants is pivotal to their success and longevity.

After the procedure, we’ll arrange a review appointment in about three months’ time. This review is to ensure that your implants are settling well and your mouth is healing as expected.

A key part of maintaining your new smile is good oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing, and use of mouthwash are crucial.

Just like natural teeth, implants can be affected by bacteria build-up, leading to gum disease, which could potentially compromise your implants.
