If you’re looking for a cost effective, minimally invasive way to enhance your smile, Composite Bonding is a treatment to consider.
Here’s a few reasons why Composite Bonding has been gaining in popularity as a treatment:
Composite Bonding uses the same king of material used for Composite Fillings. This unique resin can be moulded and shaped to match the contours of your teeth, making it an ideal solution for dealing with chipped, cracked, or irregularly shaped teeth.
One of the features that make composite bonding so popular is its ability to “shade match”
This means we can customise the colour of the bonding material to match the rest of your teeth. That’s right, composite bonding resin can be tailored to blend seamlessly with your natural enamel.
The result? A natural-looking repair that’s virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth.
Here’s something important to consider: If you’re thinking about teeth whitening, it would be a good idea to do it before you get composite bonding.
The colour of Composite is fixed once it’s applied, and unlike natural enamel, it won’t respond to whitening treatments. So, if you’re considering a brighter smile, it’s best to whiten first and then match the shade of the bonding material to your newly whitened teeth.
Composite bonding is where Dentistry meets Art. The way the resin is moulded to mimic the shape and form of natural teeth requires skill, precision, and a careful eye. It’s about enhancing your smile while maintaining what makes it uniquely yours.
How long can you expect composite bonding to last? Typically 5 – 7 years. But like many things in life, it depends a lot on circumstance.
A few factors can influence this timeframe, and I’d love to share those with you.
Composite bonding material can be prone to chipping. Now, don’t let that put you off; it’s not a foregone conclusion, but a reminder that it’s wise to be mindful of habits or situations that could put undue stress on your teeth.
And much like natural enamel, composite bonding can chip and break front force trauma to the teeth.
If you grind your teeth or suffer from bruxism, composite bonding might not be the best choice for you. Grinding teeth can put a lot of stress on your composite bonding and lead to quicker wear and potential damage.
While composite bonding is robust, it’s important to note that it’s not quite as durable as porcelain—the material used in crowns and veneers. So if you’re particularly hard on your teeth, we might need to explore other options.
Now, on to the aesthetic side of things. To keep that shiny, natural “sheen”, teeth that have composite bonding placed will need regular maintenance. A professional polish every year is usually enough to keep them looking their best.
Let’s not forget about oral hygiene. It’s just as important—maybe even more so—when you have composite bonding. Regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups will help prolong the life of your bonding and keep your entire mouth healthy.
Composite bonding treatments usually requires a 1-hour planning session, followed by 30 minutes of actual treatment per tooth. So, if you’re planning for 8 teeth, you can expect the treatment to take around 4 hours.
Now, let’s break this down further and dive into your treatment journey, step by step.
The first step is to make sure we get a comprehensive understanding of your dental health. We’ll start by taking X-rays to ensure your teeth and underlying bones are healthy. At this stage, we’re trying to get a clear picture of what’s going on inside before we make any changes on the outside.
Next, it’s time for a chat. What are you looking to achieve with your smile? Do you prefer a subtle change, or are you after a total smile makeover? Your goals guide our treatment plan.
To help us visualise your teeth digitally and create an effective plan, we may take a 3D scan of your teeth. This technology helps us explore the teeth together, plan for the best treatment, and provide the best treatment outcomes.
Using the VITA shade guide system, we’ll discuss your desired whitening shade for your composite bonding. We also take clinical photos as part of our detailed preparation.
The next step could be whitening, but only if you wish. If you’d like your surrounding teeth to closely match your new composite bonding shade, teeth whitening might be the way to go.
Have you ever wished you could try on a new smile before committing to it? With our ‘trial smile’, that’s exactly what you can do.
This mockup is especially useful for full arch smile makeovers and gives you an idea of the final result before we place the composite. This step is typically reserved for full arch Smile Makeovers.
Now the fun stuff! The treatment itself.
Each tooth generally takes between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the complexity. Systems such as SmileFast are available too which reduce the treatment time by providing a template. For procedures involving multiple teeth, we typically book a half day.
