What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the administration of medications to induce a relaxed state during dental procedures.

This approach is especially beneficial for patients who struggle with dental anxiety, fear, or have difficulty sitting still for prolonged periods of time.

Medications used in sedation dentistry target the central nervous system, effectively calming nerves and reducing discomfort. Depending on the level of sedation required and the patient’s medical history, dentists may utilise various methods, including inhalation or IV sedation.

How does it work

Sedation works by administering medications that depress the central nervous system, calming anxiety and reducing discomfort. These can be inhaled, taken orally before the appointment, or administered via an IV.
There are a range of options available, each providing a different level of sedative support to patients.

Types Of Sedation In Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, which is referred to as ‘laughing gas’, is administered through a comfortable mask placed over the nose. This colourless and odourless gas is mixed with oxygen and inhaled by the patient. It induces a state of relaxation and euphoria, making the dental experience more comfortable.
This form of sedation is categorised as minimal sedation, as it allows patients to remain awake and responsive throughout the procedure. It is particularly beneficial for reducing anxiety and pain perception.
The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly once the mask is removed, allowing patients to resume normal activities without lingering sedative effects.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation entails taking prescribed medication before your dental appointment to induce a deeply relaxed state. These medications are taken as directed by your dentist, usually in the form of a pill. You may be asked to take this medication an hour or so before the procedure.
While under oral conscious sedation, patients remain conscious and able to respond to verbal commands, but they experience a heightened sense of relaxation. This form of sedation is effective in reducing anxiety and minimising discomfort during dental treatments, especially for individuals with moderate to severe dental phobia. This falls under moderate sedation.
One of the benefits of oral conscious sedation is that it allows complex dental procedures to be performed with ease while keeping patients comfortable and calm. However, the effects of the medication may linger after the procedure, so patients are typically advised to have a companion accompany them and refrain from driving for a few hours.
IV Sedation
IV sedation, short for intravenous sedation, involves the administration of sedative drugs directly into the bloodstream through a vein, usually in the arm or hand. This method allows for precise control over the level of sedation, making it suitable for patients undergoing more complex or lengthy dental procedures.
During IV sedation, patients remain conscious but are in a deeply relaxed state. They may feel drowsy and less aware of their surroundings, which helps alleviate anxiety and discomfort during the dental treatment. The medications used in IV sedation act quickly, producing an almost immediate effect.
This form of deep sedation is particularly advantageous for patients with severe dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or those requiring extensive dental work. The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout the procedure to ensure optimal comfort and safety.
General Anaesthesia
General anaesthesia renders patients unconscious and is used for extensive dental surgeries where complete unconsciousness is necessary. The administration of general anaesthesia is carefully monitored by an anaesthesiologist, and therefore it is limited to surgical settings.
Comparing Dental Sedation Options

Minimal sedation helps you relax while staying awake. You’ll feel calm and at ease but will be able to respond to questions and instructions. This is often achieved with nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
Moderate Sedation Moderate sedation puts you in a deeper state of relaxation. You might slur your words when speaking and have little memory of the procedure. It can be administered through oral medications or intravenous (IV) sedation.
Deep Sedation Deep sedation puts you on the edge of consciousness, but you can still be awakened if necessary. You won’t feel pain or be aware of the dental work being done. This level of sedation is typically administered through an IV.
General Anaesthesia General anaesthesia makes you completely unconscious during the procedure. You won’t feel, hear, or remember anything. It’s usually reserved for extensive surgical procedures and must be administered by an anaesthesiologist.

What Happens During Sedation Dentistry?

Before Your Appointment
Prior to your dental appointment, your dentist will discuss the available sedation options with you. This consultation is crucial for tailoring the sedation approach to your specific needs and medical history.
You will likely be asked to provide detailed information about your health, including any medications you are currently taking and any underlying health conditions. This information helps ensure the safety and effectiveness of the sedation method chosen for your procedure.
On the Day
On the day of your dental procedure, you will receive the sedative according to your dentist’s recommendation. The method of administration will depend on the type of sedation chosen:
Nitrous Oxide: You may inhale nitrous oxide (laughing gas) through a comfortable mask placed over your nose.
Oral Conscious Sedation: You will take prescribed medication orally, usually about an hour before your appointment, to induce a relaxed state.
IV Sedation: Sedative medications will be administered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous line, ensuring quick onset and precise control of sedation levels.
Throughout this process, your dentist and their team will monitor you closely to ensure your safety and comfort.
During the Procedure
Once the sedative takes effect, you will enter a relaxed and calm state while remaining conscious. You may feel drowsy and less aware of the dental procedure, which helps reduce anxiety and discomfort.

Despite feeling relaxed, you will remain responsive to verbal cues and instructions from your dentist throughout the treatment.
Aftercare
After completing the dental procedure, you will be carefully monitored during the recovery phase. The effects of sedation vary depending on the type used:
If you received nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation, the effects will wear off quickly after the procedure. You may feel slightly drowsy or disoriented initially, but these sensations will resolve soon. On the other hand, IV sedation may require more careful monitoring post-procedure to ensure your safety as the sedative effects gradually diminish.
Your dental team will provide instructions for your aftercare, including any necessary precautions to take. They will also ensure you are fully alert and stable before you leave the clinic. If you received deeper sedation, it’s advisable to have a trusted friend or family member accompany you home and assist you during the initial recovery period.

What To Expect From Sedation Dentistry

Side Effects of Sedation

While sedation dentistry is generally safe and well-tolerated, it may involve some potential side effects, although these are typically mild and temporary. The specific side effects can vary depending on the type of sedative used and individual factors.

Common side effects include:

Dizziness – Some patients may experience a sensation of lightheadedness or dizziness immediately after the procedure.

Nausea – Mild nausea or an upset stomach can occur in some individuals after receiving sedation. This side effect is more commonly associated with certain types of sedatives, such as oral medications.

Drowsiness – Sedatives can cause drowsiness, which may persist for a short time after the dental procedure. It’s important to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until fully alert.

Dry Mouth – Many sedatives, including nitrous oxide and oral medications, can cause dry mouth (xerostomia). This occurs because sedatives can reduce saliva production temporarily. Drinking water or using saliva substitutes can help alleviate this discomfort.

Mild Headache– Some individuals may experience a mild headache following sedation, particularly if the procedure involved sitting in a dental chair for an extended period or if they are prone to tension headaches. Rest and over-the-counter pain relievers can usually alleviate this symptom.

Emotional Changes – It’s not uncommon for patients to experience emotional changes, such as feeling more emotional or tearful, immediately after sedation. These effects are usually temporary and related to the medication’s influence on the central nervous system.
Possible Risks of Sedation
While sedation dentistry is considered safe for most patients, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and complications to be aware of. These risks can include allergic reactions to sedative medications, although they are rare and typically minor when they occur. Allergic reactions may manifest as skin rashes, itching, or, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.
Another potential risk is excessive sedation, where the patient may become overly sedated beyond the intended level. This can lead to complications such as respiratory depression or a drop in blood pressure.
During any procedure involving deep sedation, vital signs are closely monitored to promptly address any changes and ensure the patient’s safety.

Who Can Get Sedation Dentistry?

Many individuals benefit from sedation dentistry, including patients with severe dental anxiety, individuals undergoing extensive or complex dental work, children who struggle to sit still during procedures, patients with sensitive teeth or strong gag reflexes, and more.
If you think you would benefit from being sedated during a dental appointment, talk over your options with your dentist or book in an appointment with us.

Can children get sedation during dental procedures?

Yes, children can receive sedation under appropriate supervision to ensure safety and comfort.

At Danbury Dental Care, we are one of the few providers of inhalation sedation for children, so we’re uniquely qualified to advise on this as an option for your child.

How Can Sedation Dentistry Help?

For those hesitant about seeking treatment for dental issues, even when faced with pain and discomfort, sedation offers a less stressful way to receive restorative work. Whether it’s due to dental anxiety, previous negative experiences, or the complexity of the procedure, sedation can significantly improve your time in the dentist’s chair.

Dental Anxiety and Sedation

Dental anxiety is a common issue that prevents many people in the United Kingdom from seeking regular dental care. Sedation dentistry provides a solution by helping anxious patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during treatments.
The use of sedatives allows patients to undergo procedures without the overwhelming fear or stress they may typically experience. Knowing that there is an option for pain-free dentistry may make it much easier to book in regular check-ups and treatments.

Overcoming Bad Experiences

For individuals who have had traumatic dental experiences in the past, sedation dentistry can be particularly beneficial.
A history of pain, discomfort, or dismissive practitioners can leave lasting emotional scars and make dental visits daunting. Sedation allows patients to relax deeply or even be in a reduced state of consciousness during the appointment, allowing the dental team to work efficiently without causing undue distress.

Making Complex Procedures Stress-Free

Complex dental procedures, such as wisdom tooth extractions, root canal treatments, or extensive restorative work, can be lengthy and uncomfortable for some patients. By inducing a relaxed state, sedatives help patients remain calm and still throughout the entire process.
At Danbury Dental Care, we understand the diverse reasons why patients may benefit from sedation dentistry. Whether you struggle with dental anxiety, have had negative experiences in the past, or require extensive treatment, our compassionate team is here to provide a supportive environment and personalised sedation options tailored to your needs.

How Can I Get Sedation Dentistry?

If you’re interested in exploring sedation options for your dental treatments, the first step is to discuss this with your dentist. Explain your concerns and reasons for wanting sedation, whether it’s due to dental anxiety, previous negative experiences, or expected discomfort during a long or complex procedure.
Not all dental practices offer sedation services, so it’s essential to inquire about the availability and types of sedation they provide.

At Danbury Dental Care, we specialise in providing a comprehensive range of sedation services in a caring and supportive environment. Our experienced team understands the importance of making dental care accessible and comfortable for everyone, especially those who may feel apprehensive about dental visits.
